ACHIEVING ZERO LEAKAGE BY 2050: LAYING LEAK FREE NEW NETWORKS (2016)

One of five United Kingdom Water Industry Research (UKWIR) research programs aimed at achieving zero leakage across the UK water network by 2050 . This project addresses specific issues, which result in leakage from water systems, and examines how advances in technology and changes to current practice will ensure that all new networks are free from leaks.

ASSESSING THE STRUCTURAL CONDITION OF PVC PRESSURE MAINS (2015)

A (UKWIR) project which examined the principal factors which result in the failure of PVC pressure mains and the relative risk and consequences of each type of mode of failure. The project also summarised the current techniques used, and those under development for the assessment of the condition of PVC pressure mains.

National Grid / Scotia Gas PE Pipe Condition Assessment (2014)

An OFGEM project that was carried out to investigate the current condition of PE gas distribution mains. PE has been used for gas distribution mains since 1969.  The purpose of this project was to establish if these systems pose any potential risk as they approach their 50 year design life.  The results of the project, which were published in 2014, will assist the gas utilities with their asset management and planning for the replacement of the existing PE systems.

Leakage from PE Pipe Systems (2010)

In the UK, polyethylene (PE) is the preferred polymer pipe for new water networks and for the rehabilitation of existing systems. For some time, there had been concern regarding the integrity of PE pipe systems against leakage. A (UKWIR) project was undertaken to identify the key causes and quantify leakage in pressurised PE water pipe systems and provide solutions. The project provided recommendations regarding improvement in installation standards; training and licensing of personnel carrying out butt fusion and electrofusion welding; testing of systems prior to commissioning; and technical solutions to prevent potential issues with coiled pipes.
